Lake Skadar, the largest freshwater lake in the Balkans, is a vital migratory ‘stopover’ for a large number of northeast European birds, and home to some very rare species. The Tara River Canyon is the second longest canyon in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located in Durmitor National Park, another World Heritage Site, with rich flora and fauna as well as more than 150 peaks that surpass 2,000 metres, five canyons, 748 springs of pure mountain water, and 18 glacial lakes. Last but not least, Biogradska Gora National Park is one of the last virgin forest reserves in Europe.

A feast for the taste buds

Montenegrin cuisine has benefitted from centuries of interaction with neighbouring countries and trade, to bring together some intricate dishes. It combines the best gifts of the sea, the Mediterranean and the rugged, mountainous hinterland. Read more

Fish and seafood are abundant along the coastline where one can find the freshest daily catch from local fishermen. In the mountains, where animals roam freely, it’s all about meat: pork, lamb and beef. The dishes are often cooked for several hours under a metal round cover, topped with hot coal. The resulting meat is tender and falls off the bone.

Montenegrin vineyards and the production of quality wine is part of the tradition of southern and coastal winemakers. The continental and northern regions are more oriented towards the production of aromatic fruit flavoured brandy: plum brandy - šljivovica, apple brandy - jabukovača), grape brandy "Montenegrin loza", or home-made grape brandy (lozovača).
